Interview on Internet Radio in the Denver Post

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

I met Kimberly Johnson at the New Media Summit in Denver (one of the scheduled TechStars events) and got to talking to her about Internet Radio and the pending legislation to increase royalty fees for webcasters.

Kimberly interviewed me yesterday over the phone and her article on this subject (along with a few of my comments) can be read here

Sorry, Britney, no hard feelings…

OQO Model 02

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I was just going through some email today and came across a Transmeta alert from Yahoo finance talking about the new OQO model 02. Not having followed Transmeta or OQO for some time now, I was excited to hear about this news (guess they released it back in January). I just now checked out the specs and prices for the Model 02. Pretty sweet.

I like the redesign. Now uses a 1.5GHz VIA processor (no more Transmeta), 60GB hard drive, and runs Vista. Wireless WAN, Wifi, and Bluetooth are standard. Has a nice docking station, HDMI port to connect to external monitor which it can drive at resolutions up to 1920×1200. Prices range from $1499 to $1899, offering a better range of prices than was available with the model 01. A review and OQO’s website for those interested. And hey, OQO, if you’re reading this, why don’t you send me one so I can do a long-term review on it!

Google Apps: Too Good to be Free

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Guess it was too good to stay free forever…

Google Apps (covered here) will soon be a paid service according to a BusinessWeek Article. The subscription fee will be “…a few dollars per person per month.” I guess even at a few dollars per user, the value per dollar is still a lot higher than you can get elsewhere. I just hope they don’t take away my Google Calendar though.

DisruptiveTech

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Welcome, the new year, and welcome to DisruptiveTech.

At DisruptiveTech, I will write about my interests and passions which include new technologies specifically in servers and data networking, entrepreneurship, and new venture creation.

I have been dragging my feet when it comes to starting a new “blog” but I have decided this will make it easier for me to disseminate information I find interesting, useful, and important to others. I will spend the next month or so covering topics on technologies that I have been using for a while now and have been recommending to others.

Hopefully you will find these pages useful as a means for learning about new technologies and ideas, ones, that in my mind I feel have the ability to create disruptive change in the technology industry. I tend to get excited about technologies that promise new/easier ways of doing things, new and better feature sets, reduced costs of ownership, and especially ones that challenge the “enterprise” way of doing things.

I appreciate any comments you may have and always welcome inquiries and leads to new technologies.

Thanks for stopping by,

– Joe Scharf
